Cutting food bills in Half

I recently read some great tips for cutting your food bills in half in Healthy Food Guide magazine.  They had challenged 10 families to slash their food bills for a week, and it got me thinking about what I do to keep my shopping bill on track.

I’m currently on a very healthy kick, which makes shopping easier, because I’m avoiding anything processed or high in sugar, and buying fresh food.  In the past I haven’t always gone armed with a shopping list, but this week I worked out my meal plan for the week and wrote a list, then hit the supermarket.  What a difference it made, no extras and a much lower bill.

Some  things to consider are:

  • Buy foods in bulk, this saves money and packaging, which is great for your purse and the environment.
  • Buy non perishables when on special
  • Always shop with a list and stick to it
  • Avoid processed foods – can save you heaps.  Use fruit and veges for snacks
  • Only shop the perimeter of the supermarket, this is where all the fresh, healthy food is stocked.

How do you keep your foods bills under control?

My suggestion is to go through a confectionary free checkout to avoid temptation!

Look at the shelves above and below eye level as that’s often where they put the specials, or healthier products.

With four kids and heaps who visit, we go through a fair amount of food at our place.

Snacks – buy a popcorn maker. They are usually under $30 and the popcorn is under $2 which makes up 4 -5 servings of a large packet of chips / doritos. The long term savings are great and the kids can experiment with flavours too!

Fresh made popcorn doesn’t need toppings it tastes great on it’s own.

On hot summer days there is nothing like pineapple punch – pass up the beroccas, if you are looking for a quick pick me up – combine a litre of pineapple juice, with a litre of mineral water and a small handful of mint – get ready for the buzz!

Another alternative for summer is slushies. Just pick up a big can of pineapple and orange juice, pour into ice trays, freeze and blend. Add a bit more juice to get it going.

This saves a fortune and if you can find a fruit delivery service, buy your fruit in bulk for lunches (apples / orange) split it up with a few friends – save your $$$$ and your back not having to carry it all in!

    Have fun saving,

    Marina
