With four kids and heaps who visit, we go through a fair amount of food at our place.

Snacks - buy a popcorn maker. They are usually under $30 and the popcorn is under $2 which makes up 4 -5 servings of a large packet of chips / doritos. The long term savings are great and the kids can experiment with flavours too!

Fresh made popcorn doesn't need toppings it tastes great on it's own.

On hot summer days there is nothing like pineapple punch - pass up the beroccas, if you are looking for a quick pick me up - combine a litre of pineapple juice, with a litre of mineral water and a small handful of mint - get ready for the buzz!

Another alternative for summer is slushies. Just pick up a big can of pineapple and orange juice, pour into ice trays, freeze and blend. Add a bit more juice to get it going.

This saves a fortune and if you can find a fruit delivery service, buy your fruit in bulk for lunches (apples / orange) split it up with a few friends - save your $$$$ and your back not having to carry it all in!

Have fun saving,

I would agree that lunchbox police is over the top and definitely putting the responsibility in the wrong place. My kids are only in Kindy and Pre-primary and I make their lunch. I would be most disturbed if this was happening in my school.

I think education for children on health and nutrition is very important and think a more positive approach would be better.

Look at the shelves above and below eye level as that's often where they put the specials, or healthier products.

I just found a gluten free recipe in a magazine I was reading for Gluten-free raisin and cinnamon bread:

Place 500g gluten free bread flour in a bowl with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 3 tablespoons raisins.

Separately, mix yeast with 450 ml warm water. Add to bread mix, using electric better to combine 3 minutes or until smooth. Transfer dough to a lightly greased loaf tin. Cover and leave to rise for 30-40 mins. Bake for 45 mins until golden brown. Brush with two tablespoons honey and serve.
